Patra Patri – A cute and adorable visual enactment play or as said by Vijay Kenkre – “एक द्रूक अविष्कार”, is basically a sweet conversation of handwritten letters between two characters in their 50s & 60s – Tatyasaheb and Madhavrao. The character of Tatyasaheb is played by our beloved and lovely Dilip Prabhavalkar and the character of Madhavrao is played by Vijay Kenkre.
Fortunately, I had the chance to watch one of their first opening shows, and I must say, I was impressed by how soothing and sweet the entire format of the play was set and delivered. Therefore, this is my short review blog of Patra Patri.

Patra Patri Story
First and foremost, in today’s time, the excitement of writing and receiving handwritten letters has drastically gone down. The excitement and anticipation of waiting for the response to your letter was in itself a different feeling. But nowadays, this feeling and this way of communication is somehow getting lost.

Therefore, to highlight this feeling of personal touch while communicating with your loved ones through letters, Vijay Kenkre decided to use this as a subplot to create a cute enactment in the “Abhivachan” format with Dilip Prabhavalkar.
Furthermore, the main plot or storyline of Patra Patri revolves around funny, sweet, and endearing conversations happening between two friends – Tatyasaheb and Madhavrao. They are living far apart from each other and are discussing about their surroundings or things happening in their daily lives, and expressing it to each other.
In addition to this, the idea to create Patra Patri Play comes from one of Dilip Prabhavalkar’s published books, which features comedic letters and humorous exchanges of conversation between Madhavrao and Tatayasaheb.
As the curtain opens we see Tatyasaheb taking a long flight to Paris. During this long flight to Paris, Tatyasaheb decides to write a letter to his friend Madhavrao in Mumbai. This begins a series of handwritten letters between the two friends. The letters are hilarious and funny due to their innocent attempts to understand the current changing times in their old-fashioned way.
Ultimately, Patra Patri is a very very sweet story of two ageing friends who are coping with change.

Special Moments of Patra Patri
Even if the format of Patra Patri is “Abhivachan”, it is not only about reading out letters, but it also involves a few fun and surprising elements. Indeed, scenes and cute acts that creates a nice visual spectacle for the audience.
Additionally, as said by Dilip Prabhavalkar during his interview with VeryFirstTale, “हे फक्त अभिवाचनच नाही आहे, किव्हा आह्मी फक्त सरळ बसून वाचन करत नाही, तर आह्मी दोघे यात काही गोड गंमती जमती पण सादर कारतो. जे तुम्हाला नक्की आवडेल.”
This play nicely blends dramatised reading with cute performances, bringing the characters and their old-times world to life through their surroundings.

A Beautiful Sketchy Set
Secondly, to enhance the visual appeal and dramatisation of this Patra Patri and its format, a well-designed set and apt-looking set is a must. Patra Patri by Badaam Raja Productions showcases a perfectly suited set, designed in a very sketchy, old-school black-and-white style, which nicely adds to the overall experience. The set for Patra Patri is designed by Neeraj Shirvaikar.
