Janmavaari Marathi Natak – An Experience Of “Sant Kanhopatra’s Abhanga”

Do you believe that a doctor’s kid is destined to wear a white coat and stethoscope or that a taxi driver’s child will always become a taxi driver? What about the kids of a sex worker? Is it fair to assume they will also follow in their parent’s footsteps too?

Even though these outdated notions are not relevant to the current world, there was a time back in the 15th century when notions like these were followed.

Manjiri And Vrinda

I recently had the pleasure of watching the Marathi Natak Janmavaari, written and directed by Harshada Borkar, and produced by Sweven Studios. The central theme of Janmavaari about the highs and lows of life struck a chord with me, as it highlighted how our actions shape our destiny rather than our circumstances at birth.

Additionally, I was captivated by how this Natak explored the idea that even two people facing the same circumstances can have vastly different outcomes, creating a sense of wonder and unpredictability.

Overall, Janmavaari is a thought-provoking Natak that left me contemplating the choices I make in my own life. It’s a beautiful reminder that we have the power to soar to new heights or seek refuge in simplicity, depending on how we handle the circumstances that come our way.

Why Janmavaari Deserves a Spot on Your Watchlist?

Janmavaari Marathi Natak is a powerful production that delves into the lives of two young women from vastly different backgrounds.

#1 A Compelling Story of Two Women

As the curtain opens, we see two women on a railway platform who has just missed their last local train to their home. This natak revolves around Manjiri, a sex worker who is forced to navigate the harsh realities of her profession to make ends meet for herself and her family.

Along with Vrinda, who comes from a poor Muslim family and works as a cleaner at an orphanage. While Manjiri seems to find pleasure in her work, Vrinda also takes pride in her job.

As they both interact, their contrasting perspectives and experiences make for a thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of life. Manjiri’s world is one of survival and earning money, while Vrinda’s is rooted in love for her work and the orphanage. Despite their vastly different circumstances, both of them display remarkable resilience and determination to make the most of their situations.

#2 Beautifully Executed with Emotional Depth

Janmavaari is written and executed in such a beautiful way that it encourages reflection on the human condition and our shared struggles in this complex world. The audience is left to ponder the significance of their actions in shaping their destinies, regardless of the circumstances they were born into.

Manjiri is living in poverty with her drug-addicted brother and mother. Despite her difficult circumstances, she found pleasure in her work. Manjiri also found pleasure in the money her work brought her. But when Vrinda asked her if she found joy in her work, Manjiri began to question her choices.

#3 Melodious Abhangas By “Sant Kanhopatra” Adds A Spiritual And Cultural Dimension To The Story

This is where the story takes an intriguing and emotional turn as we get to witness the beautiful yet tragic life of “Sant Kanhopatra” (A 15th-century Marathi saint-poet) –

The beauty of Janmavaari lies in its ability to showcase the parallel lives of four women in different eras. Each woman, including Manjiri and “Sant Kanhopatra”, has a unique journey shaped by their actions and choices.

As the Natak unfolds, we are treated to some of the melodious Abhangas (devotional poetry) by “Sant Kanhopatra”. However, as her story progresses, we learn that her mother, who is also a sex worker, wants her to follow her steps and become one.

This proposition challenges Kanhopatra’s very existence and raises the question of whether her life should be defined by her parents’ profession, something she stubbornly opposes.
