Chanakya Natak Story
The story of Chanakya Natak revolves around the famous majestic tales of Chanakya & Chandragupta Maurya. The natak takes us back to a time around 326 – 320 BCE.
This was the time when Chanakya, also known as Kautilya & Vishnugupt, dared to dream of a united India – “Akhand Bharat”. To bring in – One currency, One system, One law. Without any doubt, the partnership between Chanakya and Chandragupta stands as one of the most significant & strong partnerships in Indian history.
However, the bloodline of Chandragupta Maurya wasn’t going to directly make him a king. He was just a common man.
So, how did he emerge from being a commoner to setting up the largest empire in India? This transformation of his while fighting the battles of ego, love, and politics of that time is shown in Chanakya Natak – A Marathi Drama directed by Pranav Joshi, starring Shailesh Datar as Chanakya.

Of course, creating a set that could take us back to those old ancient times needs a lot of effort, planning, and designing. And who better can do all three together than the very famous set designer Sandesh Bendre? The natak’s attention to creating multiple variations of empires, sets, and scenes is commendable.
Be prepared to see more than three to four gigantic empires and different variations of sets and props. The set transforms seamlessly from one backdrop to another.
Additionally, the stunning traditional old-age costumes add an extra layer of realism. It makes us feel like we are truly watching ancient times.

Fourth, the lighting of Chanakya Natak is set so aptly that it makes the Natak visually very appealing and impacting. The well-coordinated lighting effects & the background music of the Chanakya Natak are surely going to give you goosebumps. Fifth, as the natak unfolded, I found myself on the edge of my seat, with my eyes just glued onto the stage, completely absorbed by the performing artists. The Natak effortlessly combined elements of ego, love, politics, and an intense battle, creating multiple sets of emotions that kept me engaged from start to finish. And I believe that’s one of the major reasons you need to watch Chanakya Natak.
Lastly, watching Chanakya Natak is surely a testament to the Marathi Natak industry and its capabilities & limits.
The Natak was nothing short of magical. Its exceptional performances, multiple detailed set designs, and immersive storytelling transported me to a time long past. It’s a vivid reminder of the enduring power of theatre to bring back time & history alive.
