Purush Marathi Natak – The old-time hit of the 80s starring some of the evergreen actors such as Reema Lagu, Nana Patekar, and Usha Nadkarni, is now back on the Marathi Stage after almost 40 years. Due to its dialogues, the emotions of the characters and the depth of the subject, this Natak became a milestone back in the 80s for the Marathi theatre.
With a whole set of artists and direction team, Purush Marathi Natak just completed their first opening show on 14th December 2024 at Balwant Phadke Natyagruha, Panvel. Once, one of the most popular Nataks, is back, starring Sharad Ponkshe, Spruha Joshi, and Avinash Narkar.
Purush Marathi Natak was originally written by Jaywant Dalvi. In addition to this, 2025 being Jaywant Dalvi’s “Janma-Shatabdi Varsha”, re-launching Purush Natak becomes more apt on this occasion, said Sharad Ponkshe during his Video Interview with VeryFirstTale.
I got a chance to cover their natak during one of their Grand Rehearsals and this is my personal review blog of Purush Marathi Natak.

Purush Natak Story Overview
Purush Marathi Natak was one of the old-time hits from the 80s. Some of the Evergreen Hits in the Marathi Theatre industry. Indeed, one of the major aspects of this Natak being so popular and evergreen is Jaywant Dalvi’s writing.
This Natak has some really powerful dialogues that create a big impact on its audience. While watching the new Purush Natak, I couldn’t help but appreciate how beautifully and powerfully it has been written. Some of the dialogues are so profound and impactful that they truly hit you deeply such as –
“गांधी टोपी , जी अहिंसा मिटवायला घातली होती , तीच टोपी अहिंसा आणि आवाज बंद करण्या साठी वापरली जात आहे “

The impact and the depth of this can only be seen and experienced live but this line really stuck with me for a long time.
During VeryFirstTale’s interview with Sharad Ponkshe, he said –
“हे एक अफलातून लिहिलेलं नाटक आहे. प्रत्यक पात्राच्या अंतरंगात डोकावतात दळवी. म तो नायक असुदे , नायिका असुदे , किंवा खलनायक असुदे . मनाच्या तळ्या पर्यंत जाण्याचा प्रयत्न करतात दळवी . म्हणून हे नाटक फार वैशिष्ठपूर्ण आहे.”

During VeryFirstTale’s interview with Anupama Takmoge, she said –
“पुरुष या नाटकाचा विषय कधी जुना होणारा नाही आहे . ही अशी एक कलाकृती लेखकाने त्यावेळी लिहली आहे , जी अनेक वर्षा नंतर सुद्धा सादर केली तर ती तितकीच मनाला लागते. म्हणूनच हे नाटक खूप सशक्त असं आहे .”

Moving ahead, the story of the Purush Natak, directed by Rajan Tamhane focuses on showcasing the struggles and atrocities faced by women due to men’s behaviours towards them. It depicts the story of male-female relationships, social inequality, and women’s struggles due to this. In short, it’s a revenge story of Ambika Bai (played by Spruha Joshi) against a politician named Gulabroa Jadhav (played by Sharad Ponkshe).
Now what leads Ambika to seek revenge against this politician, and the extent to which she goes, is something you’ll have to watch and know by watching one of their upcoming shows. What unfolds on stage is nothing short of intense and thought-provoking. The overall impact of this Natak simply aims to preserve human values.
Purush Natak Moments Of Appreciation
Apart from the powerful storyline of this Natak, one aspect I truly loved and enjoyed was seeing Sharad Ponkshe back on stage, indeed after his Nathuram Godse Natak hit. The way he immerses himself into his character is simply outstanding. Even though he plays a negative role, his performance and acting carry such a unique charm that you can’t take your eyes off him. For me, Sharad Ponkshe sir is the true highlight of the stage, and his presence adds a special spark & charm to the Natak.
Secondly, I’d like to emphasise the fact that this newly launched Purush Natak is only running for a limited time. Yes, the team has already announced in their posters that there will be just 50 shows in total. So, if you’re planning to catch this Natak, make sure to grab your seats for one of their upcoming shows soon.
On a personal note, what made this Natak stand out for me was Sharad Ponkshe sir’s brilliant acting. His performance alone makes this Natak a must-watch!
